Folk Harmonies out of Thin Air (1).jpg
Ann Downey_edited.jpg

This fabulous session with Ann Downey is to help demystify the process of finding and singing harmonies.

Date: Thursday Feb 5, 7:00 to 8:30 pm
Fee: $25

Age: adult

Pre-requisite: Some singing experience necessary (not for beginners)

To register: please send your first and last name, email address and an e-transfer to alcornmusic@gmail.com

We will sing a couple of familiar and simple folk/roots songs. No music reading will be happening, and all will be a cappella / unaccompanied.

Our approach will be to play with and sing various tones, with the end goal of layering these tones into harmonies.

There will be a lot of singing while listening. We’ll be trying different small changes in note choice while listening to the differences these changes make in a chord.

This will help you be able to pull them out of thin air again, next time you want them. Come along and make some good musical noise with us!

About Ann:

Ann Downey sings and plays upright bass, clawhammer banjo, and guitar at the drop of a hat;  with old-time Appalachian, country, swing (country and jazz), bluegrass, Celtic, English, and klezmer music and whatever fits. She loves yodeling and wacky songs, and finding hair-raising harmonies.

She grew up mostly in the southwestern U.S., but is now well settled in Ottawa, where she sings, harmonizes, plays, travels and/or records with Finest Kind, Sneezy Waters, Saloon Dion, and The Toasted Westerns among others. Ann is frequently on call for bass and harmony vocals on projects in the studio as well as on stage. Ann has taught harmony singing and yodeling privately at camps and festivals in Canada and the U.S., and currently teaches clawhammer banjo at Alcorn Music Studios.
