For many folks, Christmas music is pop music with seasonal themes that is heard in the shops as soon as Halloween is over. But for some of us, Christmas music is the collection of old carols that have been sung in community gatherings, churches and family homes for many generations. Songs such as Angels We Have Heard On High, Joy to the World, God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen, Silent Night, Here We Come A-Wassailing, The Holly and the Ivy and Good King Wenceslas are familiar to many of us from childhood or from singing in community choirs.
As we have so little time in which to enjoy this material, let’s make the most of it, and sing together every Monday evening for four weeks starting in late November. Primarily this short course is for the purpose of enjoying singing Christmas carols in a group, but we will also be exploring part singing, learning simple harmonies to enhance the experience. No music reading is required as we will learn the music by ear. Maura will provide you with a booklet of lyrics you will be able to use both in class and on your own, and also give you links to recordings online, many with part-singing tutorials.
Carolling for Joy will help you develop confidence and power in your voice, as well as giving you tools for harmonizing by ear. Most importantly, you will have fun singing in a small group just for the joy of it.
